InSoft, Inc., today introduced the industry's 1st
desktop collaboration and videoconferencing solution that
provides transparent interoperability between
Windows-based PCs and 4 leading UNIX desktop
workstations.
Targeting large, multiplatform enterprise
environments, the new release of Communique! for
Windows represents a natural product line progression
which migrates InSoft's industry leading UNIX workstation
products to PC desktop systems.
"Our product strategy and open software
architecture has always addressed complex enterprise
infrastructure requirements, unlike the vast majority of
other desktop conferencing vendors who are tied to one
platform, network and video compression standard,"
said Daniel L. Harple, Jr., Chairman & CEO of InSoft.
"Communique! for Windows significantly
broadens our desktop reach, while delivering transparent
interoperability across heterogeneous desktops, networks
and video boards."
Based on InSoft's recently announced OpenDVE
application development environment, the new release of Communique!
will support the growing availability of OpenDVE-based
Plugins. Plugins are 3rd-party or InSoft-developed custom
modules that provide enhanced functionality to the
intuitive Communique! collaborative and
conferencing environment.
Examples of OpenDVE-based Plugins include enhanced
image capture and viewing modules for telemedicine and
CAD applications, automated Help modules for customer
support applications, speed-dial
"Hoot-n-Holler" modules for trading and
financial applications, and remote camera control for
executive conferencing environments.
"Communique! is not a point solution
application. It is the only extendible, scalable
collaborative and conferencing environment that will give
the enterprise and its users unlimited functionality
specific to their requirements," said Harple.
"Equally as important, the Communique!
software architecture eliminates 'obsolescence risks'
associated with rapidly changing technologies and
standards that impact desktop collaboration and
conferencing."
Harple added that, in fact, advancements in
networking, video, audio and data sharing standards can
be incorporated into its software architecture and
shipped to customers while maintaining backward
compatibility to previous Communique! components.
OpenDVE, the new application development toolkit from
InSoft, is a robust suite of application programming
interfaces (APIs), libraries and management functions.
OpenDVE is based on the InSoft Digital Video Everywhere
(DVE) software architecture that enables true
interoperability between supported Windows and UNIX
desktops, video compression algorithms, such as, JPEG,
H.261, Indeo, CellB and DVE2, and networks such as
Ethernet, ATM, FDDI, Frame Relay, SMDS and ISDN.
Communique! is a multipoint, desktop
conferencing solution which integrates intuitive,
easy-to-use collaborative/document conferencing tools
with real-time video/audio technology.
Communique! Conference Kits
are complete conference kits excluding the base desktop
computer. They include Communique! software, an
integrated audio/video board, a choice of either a low or
high-resolution CCD video camera, and a studio-quality
microphone. An Indeo upgrade option is also available.
The ConferenceKit has a list price of $1995
Communique! is supported on the following
platforms: 486 or Pentium-class PCs running Windows 3.1
or above, Sun Microsystems SPARC and compatibles running
Solaris 1.1 and above, Hewlett-Packard Series 700s
running HP-UX, IBM RS/6000 RISC and PowerPC-based
systems/AIX, and Digital Alpha AXP running Digital UNIX.
InSoft is a worldwide leader in the technology and
sales of collaborative computing development tools, and
desktop conferencing and distributed digital video
applications. Its products are marketed directly to
commercial and government end-users, through leading
systems manufacturers and value-added resellers, for
applications such as financial services, computer-aided
design, engineering and exploration, telemedicine/health
