Newbridge Networks Corporation, a worldwide leader in
ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) networking products, and
InSoft, Inc., a leading provider of collaborative
computing, desktop conferencing and distributed digital
video solutions, announced today a joint development
agreement to bring to market the world's 1st integrated
ATM-based desktop videoconferencing application.
Utilizing the Newbridge VIVID ATM local area network
(LAN) products as the network infrastructure, and
InSoft's OpenDVE
Application Programming Interface (API) Development
Environment, the agreement will result in the development
of the most advanced distributed desktop multimedia
applications announced to date. InSoft's industry-leading
desktop conferencing software, Communique!, will
be the 1st application released under the agreement.
Communique! is a feature-rich, collaborative
desktop conferencing solution which integrates real-time
video technology with fully interactive, easy-to-use
document conferencing tools. Newbridge VIVID products
provide a highly scalable and manageable ATM LAN
architecture.
"This agreement represents the melding of the 2
technologies most critical to businesses seeking to
exploit the information explosion, ATM and desktop
conferencing," said Peter Sommerer, President of
Newbridge Networks Corporation. "This partnership
between industry leaders, InSoft and Newbridge, is
uniquely positioned to be the first to make quality
videoconferencing to the desktop a reality."
"ATM will enable businesses to take advantage of
videoconferencing and distributed desktop multimedia
applications more effectively than before," said
Daniel L. Harple, Jr., Chairman and CEO of InSoft.
"OpenDVE enables corporate and third-party
developers to optimize their applications onto VIVID ATM
transparently."
As part of the agreement, Newbridge and InSoft will
cooperate to optimize the interface of VIVID ATM Network
Interface Cards (NICs) and Communique!, resulting
in improved performance of packet-based videoconferencing
between Ethernet-attached and ATM-attached desktops.
Newbridge will provide ATM networking expertise and
hardware products including the VIVID ATM Workgroup
Switch and Network Interface Cards (NICs). InSoft will
provide multimedia applications and middleware expertise,
including Communique!, multipoint desktop
videoconferencing, InSoft Network Television (INTV!), and
OpenDVE.
InSoft will integrate the native ATM layer of a
Newbridge VIVID network into its overall DVE (Digital Video
Everywhere) architecture in support of multimedia
applications at ATM-attached desktops. This enhancement
will allow developers to use OpenDVE to exploit the
benefits of Newbridge VIVID ATM networking capabilities
transparently. A subsequent native ATM application will
be INTV!, which provides on-demand access to live
or recorded video directly from the desktop.
OpenDVE is InSoft's API Developer Environment which
allows corporate and 3rd-party application developers,
and systems integrators, to write applications with
built-in collaborative and conferencing features. InSoft
is the predominant vendor today shipping multimedia
applications based on a core architecture strategy that
enables multiplatform communications, network
interoperability and video compression independence.
Today, users are taking advantage of InSoft's Communique!
and INTV! on financial trading floors, in
mission-critical telemedicine/teleradiological
applications, and for concurrent engineering. The
coupling of ATM and videoconferencing will be especially
important because of the resulting enhanced quality of
service, higher performance of multipoint conferencing,
and seamless integration into H.320-based
videoconferencing systems.
InSoft is a worldwide leader in the technology and
sales of workgroup collaboration, desktop conferencing
and distributed digital video solutions. Its products are
marketed directly to commercial and government end-users,
through leading systems manufacturers and value-added
