Teleconference Magazine and Applied Business
teleCommunications announced InSoft, Inc. was awarded the
Most Significant Advancement in Desktop
Videoconferencing for 1994 at the TeleCon XIV Awards
dinner in Anaheim, California.
"InSoft's Communique!
product was chosen by Teleconference Magazine's annual
awards judges as the most significant development in
desktop video for 1994. It was a clear choice of all the
products nominated," said Patrick Portway,
President, Applied Business teleCommunications.
The TeleCon Awards, held annually in conjunction with
the TeleCon trade show, recognizes the most outstanding
achievements in the teleconferencing, business television
and distance-learning industries.
"Personal Technology Research agrees with the
decision of the Telecon Awards committee," said
Sarah Dickinson, Video Vision Program Director, Personal
Technology Research. "We have watched the
development of InSoft over the last year and have been
most impressed with the company's management, growth and
high quality videoconferencing solutions."
In 1994, InSoft's desktop collaboration and
videoconferencing system, Communique!, remained
the only product that runs transparently on various
networks, between multiple computing platforms and
provides multi-algorithm support.
At the platform level, Communique!
interoperates between multiple platforms such as the
Hewlett Packard 9000, Series 700 workstations, Sun
Microsystems workstations, IBM RS/6000, DEC Alpha AXP
running Digital UNIX and Windows NT and 486 PCs running
Windows 3.1.
At the network level, Communique! runs over
various network topologies such as Ethernet, Frame-Relay,
ATM, ISDN, FDDI, T1 and SMDS. At the video board level, Communique!
allows transparent interoperability using different
standard hardware and software codecs such as JPEG, MPEG,
CellB, Indeo and H.261. InSoft is the only open systems
conferencing company supporting multiple algorithms.
"We are very much behind InSoft and the award
comes as no surprise to us," said Robert Mirani,
Analyst, the Yankee Group. "InSoft has impressed us
as the only open systems conferencing company
simultaneously supporting and integrating more standards
than any other vendor (at the platform, network and video
board levels)."
In 1994 InSoft added InSync to Communique!, an
adaptive, fully scalable algorithm that transparently
manages frame rate, frame size, sampling rates, CPU load
and compression ratio. It delivers the highest quality
audio/video synchronization with 24-bit image handling
under the most demanding network conditions.
InSoft also added a bandwidth management feature
allowing users to preset their audio and video bandwidth
throughput to assure users work within their network
limits, yet still achieve productive, effective quality.
Network administrator tools can also be instituted for
greater monitoring and control.
Communique! is currently the only multipoint
solution based on a core software architecture that
facilitates multiplatform conferencing, network
interoperability and video compression independence. The
architecture, called Digital
Video Everywhere (DVE), includes an API development
framework that allows corporate and 3rd-party application
developers, and system integrators to customize
applications with built-in collaborative conferencing
features.
"More so than any other current vendor, InSoft
has a decisive technological advantage and product
strategy," said Keith Wimberley, director of
marketing at InSoft. "We have a proven architecture
that allows us to implement evolving standards, while
protecting the investment of our installed base."
Communique! integrates real-time digital video
technology with fully interactive, document conferencing
tools, such as shared applications, White Board and Chat
Tool. Communique! is installed in over 300
customer sites worldwide, controlling an estimated 40% of
the desktop videoconferencing market.
InSoft is a worldwide leader in the technology and
sales of workgroup collaboration, desktop conferencing
and distributed digital video solutions. Its products are
marketed directly to commercial and government end-users,
through leading systems manufacturers and value-added
resellers, for applications such as financial services,
computer-aided design, engineering and exploration,
health care, entertainment, legal, telecommunications,
and a myriad of other information technology
applications.
