Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania
Digital Equipment Corporation today announced a new
line of high-performance workstations that ship with
InSoft, Inc.'s industry-leading Communique!
desktop conferencing software. Digital is the first major
computer systems manufacturer to bundle a real-time
collaborative computing solution as a standard
application with each workstation.
Called Communique! Starter, this version
features InSoft's full-featured shared Whiteboard as well
as collaborative features for text messaging, screen and
image capture. Communique! Starter is based on the
InSoft Digital Video
Everywhere (DVE) communications software
architecture. DVE enables cross-platform conferencing
between Windows-based PCs, Sun Microsystems,
Hewlett-Packard, Digital Equipment, Silicon Graphics and
IBM UNIX workstations; transparent network connectivity
between Ethernet, ATM, FDDI, Token Ring, Frame Relay,
SMDS, ISDN and wireless; and, video interoperability for
JPEG, Indeo, H.261, CellB and DVE2.
"Digital is committed to providing heterogeneous
productivity and standards-based multimedia solutions
with the industry's most powerful workstation
offerings," said Philippe Ribeyre, Vice President,
Workstation Business Segment, for Digital. "The
market is recognizing the value of collaborative
computing as an effective business communications tool,
and these types of applications can really take advantage
of AlphaStation's 2nd generation high performance 64-bit
architecture."
Daniel L. Harple, Jr., Chairman & CEO of InSoft,
said, "Digital's new AlphaStations provide dramatic
application performance. The shear power of the new Alpha
processors provide a key enabling technology required to
make collaborative computing and desktop
videoconferencing a more pervasive desktop application.
The AlphaStation 600s and 200s are exceptional desktop
conferencing platforms."
Customers requiring upgrades to InSoft's full-featured
Communique! desktop videoconferencing application
can do so through the Communique! Step-Up Program
by calling InSoft or Digital. The program offers 2
upgrade kit options, called the Premium Kit and the Value
Kit, that include multipoint video/audio conferencing and
application sharing software, either a high-end or
low-end video board, camera and speakers.
The Premium Kit packages the high-end Full
Video Supreme JPEG video capture PCI board and is
priced at $3269. The Value Kit includes the Full Video
Basic PCI adapter card with programmed I/O and lists for
$2349.
Communique! Starter will ship with AlphaStation 600
Models 5/300, and 5/266, and the AlphaStation 200 Models
4/100, 4/166 and 4/233 running Digital UNIX or Windows
NT.
