MDL Corporation Product Strategy

Introduction

Headquartered in Bellevue, Washington, MDL Corporation is a worldwide provider of collaborative multimedia software and development tools, and market leader in the sales of collaborative computing, desktop conferencing and distributed digital video applications. The company's products, which enable transparent digital convergence, are based on its open software architecture, Digital Video Everywhere, or DVE, which enables:

  • Multimedia collaboration between multiple desktop systems including Pentium-class PCs running Windows '95, '98 and NT, Sun and SPARC-compatible, Hewlett Packard, Digital Equipment Corp., IBM, and Silicon Graphics workstations
  • Transparent network connectivity across the Internet and Intranet (Ethernet, Token Ring, ATM, Frame Relay, FDDI, ISDN, T1, Fractional T1 and SMDS)
  • Video interoperability using a multi-algorithm software CODEC design, between compression standards such as Indeo, JPEG, H.261, H.320, CellB, and DVE2

Designed for diverse environments from the corporate enterprise to the home user, the MDL product strategy and open software architecture addresses complex infrastructure requirements, unlike the vast majority of other desktop conferencing vendors who are restricted to one platform, network and video compression standard. MDL's architectural approach eliminates "obsolescence risks" associated with rapidly changing technologies and standards that impact desktop collaboration and conferencing.

Intranet Applications

  • Communique! - Desktop Collaboration and Videoconferencing.
  • GlobalConference - LAN/WAN Conferencing bridging OpenDVE-based desktop videoconferencing solutions to compatible room, group and desktop systems.
  • MDL Network Television (INTV!) - Distributed Digital Video to the Desktop (i.e., CNN to the Desktop).
  • MDL SHARE - Module for Application Sharing.

Intranet Development Tools

  • OpenDVE - Multimedia Collaborative Development Toolkit including Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), libraries and management functions.

How Is MDL Different?

MDL is the only company to deliver transparent interoperability between heterogeneous desktop systems, networks and video compression algorithms; the first company to provide a collaborative multimedia development environment to complement its Communique! conferencing application; extensive system and network integration expertise and support.
