Introduction

Welcome to MDL Network Television, an application that efficiently provides high-quality video and audio to network users. INTV! is built on MDL’s Digital Video Everywhere (DVE) open software architecture, and provides "on demand" video and audio feeds across the network.

MDL’s OpenDVE architecture allows users to view INTV! transmissions without costly video capture boards, leading to a lower price-per-seat ratio. INTV! is also a multi-platform solution, with support for viewers on Solaris 1, Solaris 2, HP-UX, and Microsoft Windows. The station software is supported on Solaris 2 and HP-UX.

As with all OpenDVE applications, INTV! is designed to integrate easily into any existing client-server architecture. INTV! is comprised of two components, the Station (server) and the Multimedia Chooser (client).

The INTV! Station

INTV! Stations are workstations that are set up to transmit audio and video information to the network. INTV! Stations are the only systems that require a video capture device. Once a station has been added to a network, it will automatically accept requests from INTV! Media Choosers.

INTV! Stations are highly configurable, and the station’s administrator has the ability to adjust each station’s video, audio and network parameters. INTV! stations use multicast IP routing to provide data over the network as efficiently as possible, minimizing usage of system resources and network bandwidth.

The INTV! Media Chooser

The INTV! Media Chooser and INTV! Viewer for Windows provide users with a straightforward interface for tuning in INTV! stations. The chooser allows users to tune in stations on the network, and dynamically locates new stations when they are installed.

The Chooser has a simple point and click interface that provides the user with a list of available stations at their fingertips, and allows them to tune them in, mute them, and tune them out quickly and easily.

Uses of INTV!

INTV! is a powerful tool for disseminating information throughout your organization. Some applications of the INTV! software are documented below.

Televised Media Viewing

INTV! can be used to distribute broadcasts from television stations using either a tuner or a VCR. Set up a station capturing video from the channel of your choice, and everyone with a chooser installed will have access to that media.

Training and Distance Learning

INTV! is an excellent solution for the broadcast of training videos or live lectures. Using INTV!, you can easily distribute programs such as these over the network, directly to the desks of those who can use the information most.

Remote Surveillance

INTV! stations can be set up to transmit live video over the network, providing the capability to monitor a shop floor, assembly line, or parking lot. Multiple stations would allow users to monitor several areas at once.

How to Use This Manual

This manual is intended to both instruct the user on how to use INTV!, and to be a reference to administrators, providing information on improving video quality and maximizing network performance. The following conventions exist within the manual:

text that appears in a fixed width font is code, and generally is an example of a command that the user should type.

This is highlight text. These highlights contain important points that need to stand out above the general context of the manual.

The first part of the manual discusses installation of INTV!. It includes chapters on System Requirements, Installing Optional Hardware, Installation and Licensing on Unix Machines, and Installing and Licensing the Windows Version of the Viewer.

The next segment of the manual covers the INTV! Station, with chapters documenting the Station software itself, and the INTV! Admin Tool.

After the Station section is the documentation for the INTV! clients. Chapter 8 covers the INTV! Media Chooser for Unix, and Chapter 9 covers the INTV! Viewer for Windows.

Rounding out the manual, there is a chapter with Common Questions about INTV! and troubleshooting information. The appendix outlines technical information regarding the INTV! software.
